PLANT MEDICINES
Plant medicines have been central to healing for thousands of years, especially in Indigenous, ancestral and earth-based traditions. Their importance goes far beyond just treating symptoms as they work with the body, mind and spirit in ways modern medicine is only beginning to understand.
Here’s why plant medicines are so important for healing:
Plants contain natural compounds that support the body’s own healing processes.
Unlike many pharmaceuticals, plant medicines often aim to rebalance systems rather than suppress symptoms.
Example: Adaptogenic herbs (like ashwagandha or reishi) help the body adapt to stress instead of numbing it.
Plant Medicines have the Purpose of Minimizing Side Effects and Suffering.
Many plant medicines are also used for Emotional, Energetic and Spiritual Healing.
In Indigenous cultures, plants are living beings with Healing Wisdom, not just "ingredients."
Sacred plants such as Ayahuasca, Peyote, Tobacco and Sage are used in ceremony to:
Release trauma
Connect with Ancestors or Spirit
Gain Clarity or life direction
Plant Medicines are tied to Cultural Identity and Lineage.
Using them respectfully is a way of reconnecting with lost knowledge, and are especially Healing for people whose traditional ways were disrupted by Colonization.
Every Indigenous culture has its own Plant Allies, used for generations, so this is not "alternative medicine" to them; it is Our Original Medicine.
Many plant medicines are used not just for treating illness but for maintaining Balance:
Bitter herbs support digestion
Nervines calm the nervous system
Immunomodulators support the immune system before problems arise
Plants are more holistic and preventative than much of Western medicine.
Plants grow from the earth with no patents or labs.
When grown or gathered ethically, plant medicine can be Local, Low and No Cost and Sustainable.
They must be used respectfully and not exploited as Sacred medicines like palo santo or white sage are endangered due to over harvesting and misuse.
Many plant medicines come from Indigenous traditions and must be approached with Respect, Consent and Humility.
Using sacred plants without understanding their cultural context can be harmful (even if the intention is good).
Always offer Tobacco to Mother Earth before Harvesting, do not Harvest female Plants and only take 1/3 of the Medicine.
Always Honour the source and give back to the communities or cultures that protect this knowledge.
